Mediterranean Shipping Company opens new German headquarters in Hamburg's Harbour City

    2024-01-19

Mediterranean Shipping Company is significantly expanding its operations in Germany. The company will build its new German headquarters at Stockmeyerstrasse 73 in Hamburg's new harbour town.

In addition to office space for more employees, the site in Ericusgraben, north of Stockmeyerstrasse and east of the Lohsepark in the centre of Hamburg's new port city, will provide at least 800 square metres of public space: an office complex of over 1,000 square metres on at least seven floors will be built on the site. In addition, a roof terrace overlooking the harbour town and warehouse town, a restaurant and an MSC showroom are currently under discussion. This part is intended to benefit the Hamburg public in particular and will be open to the public.

The new location offers excellent networking and good neighbourliness: numerous companies from maritime logistics, the media industry and the trade sector have already settled in the centre of the new port city near Bruktoekai and Eriksgraben. The hotel is ideally located for guests with easy access to public transport. The planned buildings will be situated on more than 2,600 square metres of land in the tradition of Hamburg's fleet development, such as the Hamburg Maritime Museum in the nearby Kaispeicher A, directly on the water's edge and will be partly built in the harbour basin.

As a next step, MSC will launch an architectural design competition in co-operation with the Municipality of Hamburg. It will be built to exceptionally high environmental standards (DGNB special eco-labelling award). Construction is currently scheduled to begin in 2026.

Since 2022, MSC's current branch in Hamburg has been located in the warehouse city. For the shipping company, which has its global headquarters in Geneva, the construction of the German headquarters demonstrates the strategic importance of the Port of Hamburg and its potential as Germany's number one port.

Most recently, MSC and the City of Hamburg acquired 92 per cent of the shares of Hamburg Port and Logistics AG in December. Together, the City of Hamburg and MSC want to drive the strategic development of HHLA and the entire Port of Hamburg. The transaction, which is still subject to approval by the Hamburg Parliament and regulatory authorities, is expected to be completed in 2024.
