The consortium of Morska Agencja Gdynia and Balta SA won the tender for the lease of nearly 5 hectares of land in the Port of Gdańsk. The property is located at ul. Major H. Sucharski, near the Baltic Hub container terminal. Within 3-4 years, a modern warehouse, storage yards and a railway siding will be built on the leased area, mainly for bulk cargo.
The lease agreement between the Port of Gdansk Authority and the companies included in the consortium, i.e. Morska Agencja Gdynia and Balta SA, was signed on October 6.
– We managed to finalize a lease agreement for a period of 30 years. On the plot at ul. Sucharskiego, a high-storage warehouse and full road and railway infrastructure will be built, with an 800-meter-long railway siding - explains Kamil Tarczewski , vice-president of the PGA for infrastructure. – We see great potential in this investment, primarily due to the fact that a modern and efficient infrastructure is to be built. All the know-how possessed by both companies constituting this consortium guarantees an increase in transshipment in the port of Gdańsk, and this is what we care about the most.
The consortium plans to complete the works planned on the leased area within 3-4 years. This property has not been developed so far.
– We have a strategic area that we, together with Balta, want to use for the reloading of bulk cargo. We plan to invest in the construction of a specialized warehouse with an area of approximately 10,000 m2. sq m. It will be a slightly different warehouse than those in the area, we want to specialize it more to meet the expectations of our customers. In addition, we plan to build a railway siding. As a result, it will be a quayless intermodal terminal , said Michał Śmigielski , president of the management board of MAG.
In turn, Dariusz Krawczyk , vice-president of Balta SA, emphasizes that the investment in port infrastructure gives his company the opportunity to diversify its activities in a new economic field.
The activities planned by MAG and Balta on the leased plot are part of the investments carried out by the Port of Gdansk Authority itself.
– We are nearing completion of the road and rail investment in the inner port, and two years ago we completed the reconstruction of the road and rail system in the outer port. Adding another siding means that the investments we have made will be fully utilized. We all want as many goods as possible to leave and arrive at the port by rail. This is primarily a convenience for residents, but we also take into account environmental issues , adds President Kamil Tarczewski.
BALTA was founded in December 1990 as a company focusing mainly on trading metallurgical coke and energy products. Currently, the company's commercial offer includes full logistic and forwarding support, including ship chartering and port services departments.
MAG provides agency services for ships, forwarding, warehousing, distribution and customs services.
